The Berlin-Brandenburg region is one of the leading locations for life science in Europa. There is a high concentration of life science companies operating here, including 190 in bio- and 270 in medical technology along with 25 pharmaceutical enterprises. In total, there are 15,000 highly-modern jobs connected to the life science industry in and around Berlin, Germany's capitol city. This includes Potsdam, of course, and other locations lying inside the state of Brandenburg and bordering on Berlin. Potsdam has 25 large research institutions, including a university, whose main research focus is life sciences. Within Europe, this concentration of brainpower is unique. Companies will find outstanding possibilities for development and cooperation in the world of science in one easy-maneuverable compact location. Established networks help to optimize procedural workings and communication within the regional research nexus-points. Thanks to this rich scientific environment, many companies have been started and networks established among the various branches. Around 3,000 students from the faculties of life science and related fields graduate from Berlin and Brandenburg universities per year. That's why Potsdam has such an excellent pool of qualified specialists and "fresh blood" young scientists.

Life science and bio-technical activities are concentrated in two locations: the Potsdam Science Park in the Golm section of town and the Bio-tech Campus located on the Hermannswerder peninsula. Around 30 companies are clustered together alone at these two locations. City wide there are actually around 50 companies involved with products and themes related to life science.

The target groups and main emphases of the Potsdam firms operating in this area are found in the fields of bio-analysis and diagnosis, agro-biotechnology, regenerative medicine and medical technology, as well as the fields encompassing the development and production of medicines. These companies get new impulses and are driven on by the many excellent scientific and research institutions located in Potsdam and the surrounding area.

Life science and bio-technology are well-known fields. However, it is exciting to see how interdisciplinary research teams are working together in fields for which there are still no recognized names! This new work is on the cutting-edge, moving beyond the borders of conventional life science as it interacts with other key fields such as information technology, nano-technology, optics, and micro-systems technology. Here you can clearly see the promising skills and potential that the Potsdam scientific landscape offers to companies.

The central point-of-contact and coordination point for all matters concerning bio-technology in the Berlin-Brandenburg region is the so-called BioTOP. This agency acts as an activity center and network coordination point between business and scientific institutions on behalf of Berlin and Brandenburg. The BioTOP is also responsible for supporting local companies and the strategic development of the region.
