Neuer Markt - The New Market Square

The New Market square is one of the best-preserved Baroque squares in Europe, and one of the most beautiful in which Potsdam has to offer. In its center is the Ratswaage (council scales) house, which was designed by Jan Bouman; today it houses a restaurant. The former Kutschstall (carriage stable) stands in the south-west of the square and today accommodates the House of Brandenburg-Prussian History. The Kabinetthaus (Cabinet house) at Am Neuen Markt 1, once served Frederick Wilhelm II as his city palace during his days as Crown Prince, and was also the birthplace of the later King Frederick Wilhelm III. Three years before him, Wilhelm von Humboldt was also born here. Today a series of cultural and scientific facilities are housed in the Am Neuen Markt buildings.
