Nauener Vorstadt, Jägervorstadt, and Berliner Vorstadt - Suburbs of Potsdam

The Nauener suburb is characterized by a very special type of building - between representative, detached villas and blocks of flats - which were built at the end of the 19th century for army officers and senior officials, and still today provide a high quality of living. This part of the city, with its built-up cityscape of better quality constructions, also includes extensive parks and the Schloß Cecilienhof palace, which among other distinctions, became world-famous when the Potsdam Agreement was signed here in August 1945.

At the north-western edge of the Neuen Garten (New Garden) in the Nauener Vorstadt, lies the Meierei (dairy farm) restaurant with a showcase brewery, which is planned to be opened to the public this year. In the park itself, you may see the unique Marmorpalais (Marble Palace), which affords a beautiful outlook onto the Heiliger See - Holy Lake. Also well worth a look, are the Alexandrowka Russian Colony, with beautiful wooden houses built in the Russian style and the Russo - Orthodox church on Kapellenberg Hill and, of course, the newly-restored Belvedere on Pfingstberg Hill, with a fabulous lookout over Potsdam and the surrounding area and, when the weather is clear, a view far into Berlin.

The Jägervorstadt is located right between the baroque inner-city and Sanssouci park. The historic installation of the vineyard terraces lends the site its typical slightly-sloping character, and thus provides interesting vantage points for a look out and over Potsdam. The building types range from suburban cottages, detached villas, and original blocks of flats dating from the 1870s. In some places, elegant mansions with parks can also be found.

This is a very sought-after residential area due to its proximity to the inner-city where the facilities of the administration and the courts are located. Particularly conspicuous in the cityscape, are the large historic administrative buildings and military installations such as the governmental buildings in the Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, which today house the offices of the city authorities, the Garde Ulanen barracks, the former school for non-commissioned officers in the Jägerallee, the Werner Alfred bathhouse, and the district court in the Hegelallee.

The charming location of the Berliner Vorstadt suburb, surrounded by the Jungfernsee and Tiefer See and Heiliger See lakes, and lying on the eastern and southern sides of the historic park of the Neuen Garten (New Garden), next to the city center, makes it one of the favorite residential quarters in Potsdam. It is characterized by representative villas, which are surrounded by extensive gardens, but there are also detached and duplex houses and the occasional extravagant multi-storey house of flats dating from the beginning of the 20th century.

In addition, there are sites for various cultural institutions such as the theater (new building 2003-04). However, one also can find discriminating businesses along both sides of the Berlinerstraße street including software companies, a car design center (new building 2003), and telecommunication companies. The famous Glienicker Brücke bridge connects Berlin and Potsdam and is the entrance to the Berliner Vorstadt suburb. From there, long pathways and cycling paths go towards the direction of Cecilienhof, the Gothischen Bibliothek (Gothic Library) and the banks of the Tiefer See - literally, the deep lake. From the freehold flats in the houses constructed close to the river banks, one has a superior view onto the Babelsberg park lying on the other side of the river.
