Friendship Island is located between the Alte Fahrt and Neue Fahrt waterways. In an area of six hectares you will find a children's playground, an open-air theatre, an exhibition pavilion and a coffee house. It is the island's unique flora in particular, which provides the right environment for rest and relaxation.
The renowned perennial shrubs expert, Karl Foerster (1874-1970) was responsible for the island's design. At his suggestion, the first German Exhibition and Viewing Garden for perennial blooming shrubs, ferns, and grasses was laid out here between 1938 and 1940. The garden was further developed in the 1950s and 1970s.
This gardener's gem is still tended with loving care today. A speciality sure to delight any visitor is the collection of original varieties cultivated by Foerster, particularly the phloxes, larkspur and asters. Friendship Island is worth a visit at any time throughout the year, since it is 'blooming' here in all seasons.
