Built according to his own plans, Frederick Wilhelm IV had the Belvedere erected on the Pfingstberg Hill simply because of the beautiful view . The plans for the building, with its noticeable Italian influence, were put into effect by Ludwig Persius, Friedrich Stüler, and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse in 1847. First planned to be a large palatial estate with view point, open flight of stairs and water fountains, the Belvedere was completed in 1863 in a significantly smaller form. After 1945 the building fell into disrepair. Thanks to many donors, the building is now largely restored and can be visited once again.
