Tourism as an Important Economic Sector
Tourism is one of the three most important economic sectors of the state capital Potsdam. In 2020, tourism generated a gross turnover of 518 million euros (dwif, 2021). The guest and overnight stay statistics demonstrate the strong interest in Potsdam as a travel destination. The city records over one million overnight stays annually (1.36 million in 2023), with approximately nine percent of visitors coming from abroad. For guests, the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office tracks 58 hotels, guesthouses, and vacation apartments with 7,140 beds.
The positive tourist development is the result of a combination of high demand for cultural and city tourism, as well as the wide range of attractions, cultural and leisure tourism offerings, and events in the capital of Brandenburg. With a variety of outdoor activities, offerings in green spaces and by the water – from park walks in the UNESCO World Heritage site to bike tours through the unique cultural landscape and water excursions in the "Potsdam and Brandenburg Havelseen" region – the offerings in Potsdam go far beyond those of a traditional city destination. Attractive tourist sites, events, and offerings that also appeal to an international audience, such as the Museum Barberini or DAS MINSK, contribute to constantly increasing the city's appeal to tourists. The fact that there is much to see and explore is also reflected in the high average stay duration of visitors for a city destination (2.5 days in 2023).
The foundation for the tourism efforts is the tourism concept of the state capital Potsdam, the update of which was approved by the City Council on March 1, 2023.
