The diverse culture of commemoration and remembrance in Potsdam is driven by extensive societal engagement. Volunteer initiatives, politically active and historically interested citizens, as well as eyewitnesses, contribute to public remembrance in Potsdam. They passionately organize events dedicated to remembrance and establish connections to the present day.
The City of Potsdam supports, coordinates, and networks the diverse activities of commemoration and remembrance work. It actively seeks to sensitize younger people to the past.
Representatives of the City of Potsdam, including the Mayor Mike Schubert, often participate in commemorative events. These events serve to remember past injustices and also to reaffirm today’s democratic values as lessons learned from history.
The multifaceted culture of remembrance in Potsdam also includes initiatives such as researching the fates of Jewish people through the laying of Stolpersteine (stumbling stones), working with eyewitnesses, supporting educational initiatives, and promoting projects that preserve the memory of the German-German border or the 1989 democracy movement in Potsdam.
The foundation of Potsdam’s commemoration culture is the **Concept for Commemoration Culture of the State Capital Potsdam**, which was adopted by the City Council on May 7, 2014. It emerged from an intensive process of participation and discussion, which is still ongoing. The culture of remembrance continues to evolve dynamically.
