The UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Schloesser und Parks von Potsdam und Berlin’ (SPSG) is one of the few world heritage sites which crosses state borders in all of Germany. With an area of 2,064 hectares, it covers land in both the states of Berlin and Brandenburg.
The independent city Potsdam and the districts Berlin-Spandau and Berlin-Steglitz-Zehlendorf as townships are responsible to be the local historic monument protection authority. Since its founding in 1995 the SPSG has been an independent local historic monument protection authority and has been responsible for the buildings and gardens of historic importance.
The SPSG is owner and local historic monument protection authority in Potsdam for Sanssouci Park, the New Garden with the lake Heiliger See, Babelsberg and Sacrow and in Berlin for the Glienicke Park and Peacock Island; in addition, it is also the owner of additional parks and palaces in Berlin and Brandenburg.
Potsdam, as the local historic monument protection authority, is responsible for parts of the Havel, Heiliger See, Jungfernsee and Tiefer See, structures in the districts Nauener and Berliner Vorstadt, the Russian Colony Alexandrovka with chapel hill, Voltaireweg as an historic connection between Sanssouci Park and the New Garden; the Italianate village Bornstedt, Lindenavenue west of the commons of the New Palace, the Swiss village Klein Glienicke and parts of Sacrow.
