The Havel Bay (Havelbucht), whose northern shore is home to the famous Steam Engine House—also known as the “Mosque” due to its oriental-style architecture—was partially filled in during the 1980s to extend Breite Straße. The area was then framed with high-rise slab buildings as part of urban development. During the redesign of the waterfront, a continuous riverside path was created.

The lawn on the bay’s northern shore was planted with ornamental cherry trees, a gift from Japan to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Neustädter Havelbucht is heavily used from the waterside, primarily for boat slip rentals. Its banks are entirely reinforced with built structures.
